Episode 8: How To Experience An Extraordinary Marriage With Simple Reminders
Let’s GO!
Today, we’re talking about setting reminders because we are all busy and forget from time to time! I don’t want those slip ups to bring tension to your relationship with your spouse, so setting reminders will help you experience extraordinary daily life together
When my husband and I were first married, I would continually forget to turn off the heat in winter, AC in summer before I left – it would cause tension between us, I wish we would’ve set a reminder but we didn’t – we pushed through a lot of tension and I mostly remember now. What you could do (and what I recommend) is writing a reminder by the door to change it before you go out.
Nowadays, we would forget to clean the bathrooms and it brings me internal angst, so we’ve decided we are going to set a monthly rhythm to do bathrooms and budgets, because budgets aren’t super fun to do either and everyone tends to forget or ignore them, especially if you don’t understand them!
Now we’re forgetting to carve out date night time, and it brings us restlessness, so we’re starting to work through a game plan to get a consistent sitter.
We forget whose we are, and we start to think and act like we are of the world, not of Christ.
Most recently, I have been forgetting who I am, so I set triggers in the last two months, and it’s been a game-changer. A trigger, in this case, is something that you put “in your way” to remind you to do something or remind you of a truth. I currently have a phone trigger telling me that I am an exceptional wife and mom, and that I am unstoppable, faithful, adoring of others. My mom used to do this all the time with scripture verses, and so I have followed suite with two verses above my desk,
“We must be determined to run the race and keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete.” Hebrews 12: 1b, 2a
“Set your mind on things above, not below.” Colossians 3:2
You can set yourself up for a great day by making reminders evident throughout your day. I believe that if you build intentional triggers, you can build an intentional life because set reminders build set habits.
These habits determine the life you live and the story you tell yourself internally about whose you are, who you are, and what’s important throughout the day. These triggers that routinely make itself part of your day that the truths become a habit in your mind (when that song plays or time comes around)is what centers you in the chaos.
Reflection Questions:
What have you been forgetting recently?
-
Who you are, whose you are, housework, budgeting, calling your parents, praying, quality time with spouse
-
What story have you been telling yourself?
-
That you’re late, lazy, too busy, anxious, not in control, confused, not enough – not good enough, fast enough, smart enough, calm enough
-
Switch the story, by switching what words you’re speaking over yourself every day.
-
-
What reminders can you set throughout the day and week to help you remember?
-
Phone notifications, scripture on wall, to-do list on fridge
Tonight, set one phone notification reminder for tomorrow about who you are, and one phone notification reminder for what you need to do!
-
Friend, you’ve got this. Get out there and hug the person you chose to be with forever, and let them know that today and everyday “I Choose You”, and get yourself or the one you love a sweatshirt to remind you both of that too – find them in the Soul Creation’s Shop!
